Fun Facts About the Fourth of July

We celebrate it every summer with bbqs and fireworks, but do you know the history of this national holiday?

  1. Originally declared a holiday in 1870 it wasn’t until 1938 that Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

  2. John Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence.

  3. The oldest delegate to sign was Benjamin Franklin (70) of Pennsylvania.

  4. The stars on the original American flag were in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

  5. The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
